Rationale: Much reflection and conversation has taken place among PVNC staff and our educational partners. We have heard the need for us to become more intentional about how we focus on our teachings and the many beautiful parallels among and between our teachings.
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are taken from the Book of Isaiah (11:1-3) in the Old Testament while the Fruits of the Holy Spirit come from Paul's letter to the Galatians (5:22-23). Both are celebrated in the Sacrament of Confirmation as manifestations of the Holy Spirit which enliven and complete our Baptism and prepare us to live our call as Christians. Three of the Gifts have alternate translations: “Right Judgment” is sometimes known as “Fortitude”, “Reverence” is sometimes known as “Piety”, and “Wonder and Awe in God’s Presence” is sometimes known as “Fear of the Lord”. The Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations guide the journey of learning for all students in Catholic schools by articulating a vision of who the Catholic learner is becoming. First Nations, Metis, and Inuit elders tell us that the Seven Grandfather Teachings are gifts to the world and, like our grandmothers and grandfathers, help us to reach beyond ourselves through those who have gone before us to those who are yet to come. They teach us how to live.
It is our hope that by reflecting on and practising these teachings together, we will gain wisdom and become visible witnesses to the world. Together, we can truly make this world a better place for all to live. Taken together, these teachings can show us the way.
